TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN EASY EXPLANATION

The True/False/Not Given questions are the most tricky in the IELTS Reading Section. Rest your mind, here, I will make it very simple for even a five year old to understand. First of all, get this straight:

i) A statement is TRUE if it expresses THE SAME idea as what is written in the passage.

ii) A statement is FALSE if it CONTRADICTS the idea written in the passage. That is, if it is a DIREECT OPPOSITE of the idea expressed in the passage.

iii) Now, a statement is NOT GIVEN, if there is no evidence in the passage supporting if that statement is TRUE or FALSE. that is, if there is no information in the passage given about the idea the statement is trying to express.

Now, let me illustrate further with examples. Lets say it is written in the passage, "JOHN, GO TO THE MARKET AND BUY ME SOME ORANGES, APPLES, MANGOES AND BANANAS"
And then you are to choose if the following statements are True/False/Not Given..

1. "He told John to go to the market and buy him fruits" .. The answer to this is TRUE because it is THE SAME IDEA as what is in the passage. I hope you understand? Ok let's continue!
2."He told John to go to the market and sell fruits" ..now, because this is a contradiction/a direct opposite of what we have in the passage, it is FALSE! Are you with me? Let's move on..

3. "He told John to find out the location of the market" ..so pay attention here. Because the location of the market wasn't talked about in the passage and we can't even tell if he asked John to find out the location or not, then we can agree that no information was given about the location of the market so the answer to this is NOT GIVEN!

NOW TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND EVEN FURTHER..

For a statement to be TRUE, you must be able to point to a portion in the passage to say "look at the evidence, this is where the idea is expressed exactly"

The same applies to FALSE questions.
But for NOT GIVEN questions, you will never find it in the passage!
